A Lesson on How to Live
George Whitman, founder of Shakespeare and Company, once said, “I opened a bookstore because it’s a business about how to live.” I’ve often imagined a world without books—not just printed ones, but even e-books—because people no longer have the patience for long-form reading or the willingness to take a deep, time-consuming journey. If that day ever comes, what would we lose? Our ability to think, imagine, feel, and reflect on what it means to live?
Personally, I’m always drawn to books about bookstores and reading. Over the years, I’ve curated two full shelves at home filled with such titles—refined through time, yet still overflowing. These books are my lifelong passion, a quiet companion through life’s changes, and a foundation for deeper thinking. For this exhibition, I’m sharing those two shelves with a reader visitors.
Why do people keep opening bookstores despite the struggle? Why do so many editors, publishers, and authors choose to stay in such a low-margin world? I believe readers already understand—because this is a study of how to live. At its core, we’re engaging in a timeless human conversation. Books allow us to transcend routine, to connect across time and space, to reflect, and to discover what life could be.
Reading reminds us we have choices. Whatever we face, there’s always someone out there who’s been through it, whose words shine a light forward. If many have walked that path, we realize it’s not the world that limits us—but our thinking. Reading gives us strength, and freedom.
In The Book Lover, Neil Gaiman is quoted: “Every time I finish creating something that didn’t exist before, the world seems a little brighter.” That’s the magic of reading. We visit other universes—some better, some worse—only to return with clearer eyes to face our own. I hope every time you leave a reader, the world feels just a little brighter.
